How to clean the kitchen extractor hood

How to clean the kitchen extractor hood, the extractor fans in your kitchen are a great way to keep it clean and ventilated. Over time, the filters will become clogged with grease and dust which can reduce its performance- but not if you take care of them! We’ve got some easy instructions on how best for cleaning up after yourself so that everything runs smoothly again without any problems or worries whatsoever…

This blog post was created by me while researching information regarding home appliances such as this one; I hope these tips were helpful when  🙂

To start, you will need:

  • Hot water
  • Washing up liquid
  • Non-abrasive brush
  • Rubber Gloves

Cleaning your metal filters is easy with these simple steps!

  1. Carefully remove any filters from the hoods, top tip cover cold ceramic and induction hobs with an old towel to protect . Most filters will slide or pop out easily but if you’re unsure refer to manufacturer/user guide for guidance on how best clean them depending what type of material it’s made from and its complexity within those surfaces; this could include brushing away dirt build-up before cleaning more extensively
  1. Fill the sink with very hot and add the washing up liquid.
  2. Place the grease filters in the sink, making sure they are entirely covered by the water. Leave too soak for at least 15 minutes.
  3. After soaking, gently scrub the filters with a non-abrasive brush. For stubborn areas of grease and grime, add extra washing up liquid directly to the brush.
  4. Be gentle with your brushing action to avoid damaging the filters. To avoid damaging the filter surface, do not use coarse scouring tools or pads.
  5. Repeat the above step on the other side of the filter.
  6. When all the grease and grime has been removed, rinse the filters fully with clean hot water.
  7. Allow the filters to dry naturally, or speed up the process by patting dry with paper towels. NOTE: do not apply heat to your filters to help them dry faster.
  8. Only when they are completely dry can you refit the filters in the extractor hood.
  9. And that’s it, you’ve cleaned the filters!

PREVENTING THE BUILD UP OF GREASE

Some tips to prevent grease build up in extractor fan filters include using a splatter guard or suitable size lid and cleaning them after each use. Keep your ventilation hoods clean by wiping down the unit with paper towels or cloth straight after each use when warm is best, takes around 20 seconds and when it is not being used so that any excess fat  from foods won’t accumulate on these surfaces either!

REPLACING THE EXTRACTOR FAN FILTERS

The metal grease filters in your kitchen extractor hood should last the lifetime of the appliance if you maintain them regularly and use the correct products  However, like anything else, they don’t last forever and can deteriorate over time. If your filters are showing any signs of deterioration or physical wear, they should be replaced as soon as possible.

If your hood has standard carbon filters, they cannot be cleaned and should be replaced at least every six months, or more regularly if the hood is used extensively same with paper filters

CLEANING THE REST OF THE APPLIANCE

While the filters are soaking in hot soapy water, you’ve got a perfect opportunity to give the internals of the hood a good clean too. Switch the power off first, Use a sponge and a non-abrasive cleaning agent to clean the surfaces of the extractor hood. Then thoroughly dry the inside walls before refitting the filters.

To clean the surface of the extractor, use a soft cloth and washing up detergent and warm water leave to dwell a few minutes to break down the grease.

Painted or powder coated surfaces should be cleaned using a soft cloth, detergent and warm water. Or use a cleaner designed for painted surfaces. Do not use abrasive or bleach-based products on any of the hood’s surfaces keep away from anything designed for sinks or bathroom cleaners. Washing up liquid is your friend !

There are many reasons to clean the filters in your extractor unit. The longer you leave it, the bigger an effect it will have on the fan’s performance. Plus, doing it every so often will ensure you don’t have the unpleasant tasks of tackling a major build up of grease.

Glass surfaces, usually found on built-in kitchen extractor fans, should be cleaned with a suitable glass cleaning agent. You’ll be able to find information on this in the user handbook/manual guide.
