Our experience with eco-friendly oven cleaning has shown us that it might take some time, but the results are worth it. We have tried this on two ovens, with great results! It doesn’t work instantly, of course, but both ovens looked like new inside over a period of months.

It’s super-easy to do and costs very little – maybe £3 for the baking soda and vinegar used. And as far as chemicals go, they’re pretty safe.

What you will need :

To create your very own eco-friendly oven cleaning solution you will need.

  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • Rubber gloves
  • White vinegar
  • Spray bottle (Helps rinsing)
  • Cleaning rags (old microfibres best)
  • Microfibre cloths (for polishing)
  • stiff brush
  • dish brush (agitation)
  • stainless steel scourer ball
  • bowl for rinsing
  • fairy liquid ( Lemon is my favourite )

What do they do?

Baking Soda is a mild abrasive that scours off dirt build-up. It also breaks down greasy build-up on the inside of the oven with a process called saponification, producing water and soap.

Water plus grease = soap. How cool is that?

Vinegar serves as a cleaning agent for removing stains on glass and metal surfaces and degreasing stubborn baked-on food residues from cookware and ovens. It’s also an anti-microbial agent, which means it kills bacteria and other microorganisms, so not only does it clean exceptionally well, but it also sanitises.

The Method

Dry baking soda is sprinkled on the oven’s interior surfaces (don’t forget to open the windows, or you’ll be in for a gasping surprise!) and covered with a bit of water and vinegar.

Allow the solution to stand for at least 30 minutes before scrubbing, then scrub the oven all over. Then let it sit for another 20 minutes or so before wiping it off with paper towels or a giant sponge if you’re in boss mode.

A good rinse to see how hard you scrubbed, you may require a hard-bristled brush for heavily charred areas or baked-on carbon for agitation, basically work the stuff in,

worst-case scenario, a stainless steel scourer to help break down the hard stuff or just let it soak longer overnight if you can, but make sure it doesn’t dry out, spritz with vinegar.

Cleaned and sanitised surfaces are left sparkling clean.

If you do this regularly, once every month or 2, you’ll never have to scrub your oven again!

Remember that your cooktop and nearby walls need a good cleaning, too – get it done while the baking soda is soaking on the inside of the oven.

Baking Soda is anhydrous sodium bicarbonate. Bicarbonate is a safe and natural cleaner that’s found in living organisms, like humans – it’s what our bodies use for digestion. But baking soda doesn’t just clean; it is an antiseptic that makes it an effective sanitiser, so you know your oven is germ-free every time!

Vinegar, acetic acid, has been used to clean and sanitise anything from woodwork to clothing for centuries. It is safe for the environment and humans, and pets (including your pet-friendly oven!).

Using eco-friendly oven cleaning techniques ensures that you’re not exposing yourself or your family to harmful chemicals commonly found in commercial cleaners.

It’s an effective degreaser so wipe up spills while they’re fresh!

Vinegar is a colourless liquid, at room temperature, with the acrid smell of sour wine. It’s made by fermenting alcohol from sugar for months or even years. If you don’t have any white vinegar on hand, apple cider and rice vinegar will work just as well!

At first, I didn’t think this would ever get my oven clean again, but I was wrong. We’ve been using baking soda and vinegar for years now to get our oven, stovetop, fridge, dishwasher and microwave clean as it’s a great way to provide an eco-Friendly oven cleaning.

The only time we use a chemical is if the build-up is too much. For me, that’s almost annually!

Kitchen Cleaning Tips

How I clean my kitchen: Once a week (sometimes twice), I wipe down my kitchen, stovetop and microwave. Every time I cook something (except if it’s a one-pot meal), I wipe off the area where I cooked. This usually means the oven, too – if you’re not in a cleaning mood by then!

I use four clean rags per wipe.

one rag for wiping down,

one rag for rinsing soapy water,

Regular eco-friendly oven cleaning can prevent buildup, making future cleanings easier and quicker.

and one to dry, a good quality microfibre cloth work best.

When you choose eco-friendly oven cleaning, you’re also making a choice to be more environmentally responsible, as it helps reduce pollution and waste.

If a spill happens while I’m cooking, I wipe it up while it’s fresh.

Remember, eco-friendly oven cleaning is not just about aesthetics; it’s about making a healthier choice for your home and the planet.

Make sure you rinse your sponge frequently (more often if you use cooking oil on it); otherwise, bacteria grow. The same goes for your dishcloth!

Once a month, I do my big cleaning session. I wipe down everything, then clean the top of my fridge and stove with baking soda and water, the oven (inside) with homemade non-toxic Eco-Oven Cleaner, all appliances inside, dishwasher, microwave, etc.

Many of our friends have turned to eco-friendly oven cleaning, and they have been impressed by the results they achieve, and it is such a simple process!

With eco-friendly oven cleaning, you’re opting for a solution that works effectively without compromising your health or the environment.

And once every two months or so, I clean the outside of my fridge with Eco-Glass Cleaner – it’s the best stuff ever!

A less effective but cheaper alternative is to mix 2 cups of water and 1 cup of vinegar in place of the Eco-Oven Cleaner. If you’re stuck without eco-cleaner, this will do the trick!
